Utility

The most advanced level of obedience training is Utility.

Exercises include:

Signals (stand, sit, down, come)

Scent discrimination (retrieve of an article bearing the handler's scent)

Directed retrieve of gloves

Moving stand for examination

Directed jumping

These are challenging skills for the dog and the handler to learn. The dog is often working independently at the handler's direction.

A successful Utility dog is an example of dog/human communication in its highest form.
